Character Highlight: Rogue (X-Men via Fate Core)

I recently got into a lively discussion about how to model everyone's favorite South-of-the-Mason-Dixon-Line X-Men member using Fate Core. If you are interested in reading through the comments as well as viewing an earlier build, check out the link below:

For those who might be less familiar with the character, Rogue is a former supervillain jobber turned hero with a superpower that allows her to temporarily steal the powers, memories and abilities of anyone by making skin-to-skin contact with them. The process usually knocks the subject out as well, until the stolen powers fade and the victim regains consciousness.

Previously she could not control her powers, but nowadays she has this problem pretty much under wraps.

This fairly easy to explain ability is often very difficult to model in RPG's, since by definition it's mechanically unbalanced..it's an ability that allows you to steal other abilities AND take the target out of the fight.

In Fate Core I modeled this as a Stunt that creates an Aspect 'Powers (and energy) drained' via a special attack (thanks again Jesse Furguson!). It seems a fairly clean solution, and fits well with the Fate Fractal as well.

Note the build below assumes that the supers game grants 2 free Stunts to PC's.

Rogue (Fate Core)

  • Aspects
High Concept: Power and memory-siphoning mutant southern belle
Trouble: Lotsa of memories, not all of them mine
Other Aspects: Muh team is muh family, and family is everything; Why is it always the bad ones that ah like?; Ah don’t wanna fight ya, but ah will
  • Skills
+4 Empathy
+3 Fight, Athletics
+2 Rapport, Notice, Stealth
+1 Physique, Provoke, Investigate, Deceive
  • Stunts/Extras
Power/Memory Absorption (5): Rogue automatically absorbs the abilities and memories of anyone she engages in skin-to-skin contact with (0 Zone distance). Resolve as an Attack Action at Weapon: 4 using her Empathy rating vs the Athletics or Will of the opponent (opponent’s choice).

If successful, the opponent automatically takes a Minor Physical Consequence Powers (and energy) drained for the remainder of the scene and Rogue can use the Stunts, Skill Bonuses and Aspects of this opponent as her own, up to her own peak bonus. Her opponent does have the option of placing another of their aspects on Rogue as a result of this action (modeling the backlash of her absorbing the memories of the victim in question).
